No Longer a Lagos Phenomenon!

Management is a great fundamental tool that is very essential in the handling of the day-to-day activities of man with the singular purpose of attaining set goals or the desired goals.

The manager, therefore, is that person who plans, leads, organizes, delegates, controls, and evaluates in the dire attempt to meet set targets and desired goals.

Management is as old as man because every aspect of human activity has one management function or another. Managers are, therefore, expected to be responsible people, groomed to execute planned schemes and deliver set goals.

Managers are more likely to succeed in their work if they keep up high standards in handling their work and carrying out their duties.

Before handling the day’s work, managers need to think well and follow laid down principles and routines to avoid mistakes.

Such mistakes are often called human error.

Wonder why mistakes should not be left as mistakes, but has to be tagged as human errors.         What does it mean to be human?                                                                                                        How do we become good managers?

In management studies, there are many theories of human development, each one of which tries to explain some vital aspect of the management function and equation.

The challenge to man has always been the application of management theories and practice into our daily lives and routines, how human development and technological advancement can offer desired crucial framework for the management of people and running of organizational systems and facilities in a knowledge based environment.

Since Management began from the cradle of man and every aspect of our daily activity is a function of one aspect or the other of management practice, everyone is, therefore, a manager at one level or another. You manage your washing machine as much as you take good cares of your lawn mower, and of course, the maintenance and operation or driving of your automobile.

Photograph above indicates a pile-up accident that occurred on an interstate highway on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Friday Oct. 5, 2012 as reported by CNN story highlights.

The accident involved as many as 46 vehicles.

Fifty-two people were reported to have been hurt, three in critical condition.

The accidents were said to have occurred about the time when a thunderstorm struck within the scene. The thunderstorm is seen as the direct cause of the mishap.

Handling Personal and Corporate challenges

Lagos is infamously reputed for traffic jams and multiple automobile accidents, mostly not as many cars as were involved in the one above. How we react to shocks and sudden occurrences in life depicts our preparedness to face challenges as they come, make and take the right decisions and actions, and then move ahead. Anything short of it, we would definitely have a situation as chaotic as that above. Often times we blame human errors, or say that nobody is perfect, or rather still claim force majore!  No matter the excuse, the damage is already done.

Management help man to see the crisis before it strikes, and plan to avoid it if eventually it actually strike. Driving an automobile is similar to steering a steamship or running an organization, it requires nothing short of our full attention. The thunderstorm was a serious distraction, a life-threatening challenge. That no life were lost show the level and caliber of drivers or managers on the wheels.

What kind of manager are you, or rather still, what type of driver are you?

With proper management Lagos could transform into New York City.

When there is a complete breakdown of law and order, with lack of adequate management practice, the City of London will not be different from Timbuktu.

That says much for organizations, enterprises, and what it takes to be human!
